Part II of The Adventures of Paula and Renee

After canning 6 quarts of pears Renee and I went to pick a few more pears and to see about getting the rest of the canning jars.  We picked a 5 gallon bucket of pears, the guys gave us his recipe to can banana peppers and we bought the rest of the jars and lids.  We brought the stuff home and put it in the garage for the time.  We will then set up some tables in the shed where we will sort them out.  Renee is so scared that the cat is going to break one.  The cat is an outside cat that stays in the garage at night and when its cold.  The cat doesn't get in the shed and we will be able to leave the tables up and everything spread out.  We got about 160 OLD jars, lots of extra zinc lids and lots of the glass liner lids all for $180.  I can't say we won't sell any as we probably will sell some to get some of our invested money back.  A couple of the jars we looked up go for over $25 each.  I plan on storing all my dried food items in some, they are simply beautiful. I can hardly believe we were able to get them so cheap.  When we get them sorted I will add some more pictures.

    It cracks me up you forget to tell about your driving skills when you write your blog.!! She drove my dads truck to day to make it easier for us to pick, we will just say I can't believe we didn't get pulled over. We stopped a few time in the middle of the road and backed uped a few time because we seen a tree with what we think are walnuts, then stopped because we thought we seen wild grapes, then apple trees... The list goes on!!! The best is the ride home, she drive so slow and in the middle of the road so we wouldnt brake any jars!!! People must think we are crazy!!!

      OK, my driving skills are excellent. If I drove fast we would never spot all the interesting things. In the middle of the road, NOT. These are country roads and most are barely 2 lanes wide. The tree with what we thought were walnuts, let me just warn you if you see a tree with little lime green balls just leave them alone. They're probably are walnuts and even tho they are green they stain your hands black. The ride home, well if I remember correctly you told me to drive like we had a new born baby on board so we didn't break the jars. As to the "People must think we are crazy" statement; that part is true, very true indeed. You have to be crazy to do some of the things we do. Things like this make life interesting. If anyone out there wants to join us for a day just let us know, we can promise you one thing; you will have a good time. :)

      I LOVE the Jars!! They will look wonderful with dried herbs or vegies all lined up like the jewels they are. Now Paula, don't let them give you a hard time. Shes envious of your eagle eye spying those fruits! LOL! Sounds to me like you are having fun and I wish I could join you for a few afternoons. The walnuts...collect them up and lay them out to dry. THe green hulls will dry and split off and the wonderful walnut shells will be ready to be cracked. By the way, those hulls are a great natural dye...perfect for stained tea towels...dye them darker. Have fun and I can't wait to see what you do next

    Yes, I did tell you to drive slow on the way home, didn't want to brake any more jars!!!lol I got to say if I was driving behind you on one of are adventures and didnt know you, I would be thinking what the h$&@ is she doing, just saying. All in good fun!! We do have lots of fun, meet real nice people, find free fruit that people are more willing to let us have, drive on wrong sides of the road( so we could see the berries better), lose car keys(that would be me), just can't wait to see what we do next!! Pumpkin season is coming up!!!

      Why yes funny you mention pumpkins when we will be going by the Libby Pumpkin Canning plant in the pumpkin capital of the US to go to the library to get a book on Ball Jars today. Just maybe if we ask real nice they will hook us up with a few pumpkins.

      I still have at least 10 more quarts to can and will be doing some of them later today. And then the apples are waiting for their turn to be made into applesauce.
